Will custom PoyntOS apps require EMV Certification?

We just purchased our dev kit and are interested in adding support for the Poynt terminal into our web-based POS platform. I see two ways we could integrate with Point:

  1. Our platform already has POS/register capabilities so we could easily add support via the Poynt Cloud Messaging services.
  2. We could develop a custom POS app that runs on the smart terminal. In the long run this would be better for our customers as we can add additional functionality specific to our product (or even possibly completely replace our current web-based POS with an app that runs on the smart terminal).

Our concern is that if we build a custom PoyntOS app, we would be required to have our app EMV certified. Since it is running on the EMV-certified smart terminal and the app has to pass Poynt’s review process, would our app fall under Poynt’s certification?

If we’re required to go through the process to certify our own custom apps, that’s a HUGE barrier and would ultimately be unfeasible for us.

Thanks for any input!

Hi Mike,

Sorry for the delay. Apps that run on Poynt do not require EMV or PCI certification. All the interaction with the cardreader is brokered by our SDK which eliminates the need for each app to be certified independently.

Awesome. That’s great news for us!

We are enjoying our dev kit so far, integrating via cloud services while waiting to see what we can do with it natively

Awesome, let us know how we can help.
